Walking the Slow Road. By the time that chapter of my life came to a close I had hitchhiked 26,000 miles. Hitching was the poor people’s airline of the day – though women faced much greater dangers on the road than I did. There was also plenty of waiting. The road-time spent talking with people from all walks of life was my basic training for organizing and community art.
