This poster was originally made for the Minnesota Second Chance Coalition in 2010. It shows a person of color holding a paper labeled “Felony Record” in one hand, as in the other hand they hold up higher a sheet labeled “Voting Record” with an American flag. Their shirt has an image of “lady justice,” and a small child gives the person a hug. In the foreground are blooming flowers, while in the background a ladder reaches up to the top of the poster and the words “Democracy Heals.” The bottom says “Restore Voting Rights!”
In the USA, only two states allow people incarcerated on felony charges the right to vote while in prison. In 19 states, people must complete often decades-long parole and probationary periods; in others they must pay fees; and in still others certain convictions bar people from voting for life. This disenfranchisement, especially considering the replication of white supremacy within the criminal justice system, limits participation in democracy across generations. Our communities deserve better, and our incarcerated and formerly incarcerated friends, family and neighbors deserve the dignity of the vote.
