It Is Our Duty to Win (Assata Shakur)

“It is our duty to fight for our freedom. It Is our duty to win. We must love each other and support each other. We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

These words were written in a prison cell on July 4, 1973 by Black revolutionary Assata Shakur. Facing state repression for movement activity, she had been shot and arrested on the New Jersey Turnpike earlier that year. In 1979, she escaped with the help of the Black Liberation Army and other allies, and later granted political asylum in Cuba.

Her quote, displayed on a compass pointing north in this poster, have since become a rallying cry for the movements for Black lives and total liberation.
